Leverkusen. Bayer is providing immediate relief to combat the Ebola outbreak in Africa, donating money and pharmaceuticals. With a donation of EUR 25,000, Bayer is supporting a Caritas International education and prevention campaign in Liberia to contain the deadly virus infection. In addition, 400 packages of Ciprofloxacin will be delivered to the Ministry of Health in Sierra Leone to stabilize the condition of Ebola patients.According to media reports, prejudice and distrust among the public are complicating the fight against the outbreak. This is why Caritas International has initiated an education and prevention campaign in Liberia to inform the population in rural areas about Ebola. "The donation to Caritas has been earmarked for hand washing kits," explains Thimo V. Schmitt-Lord, Managing Director of the Bayer foundations.The Ebola pathogen is transmitted via infected body fluids such as blood or saliva. According to the World Health Organization, 2,127 people have so far been infected, 1,145 have died from the disease (last updated: August 15).
