10×; objective, 10×) (Diaplan type 307-148.001; Leitz, Wetzlar,
Germany), and open pores were counted in 40 areas of focus
(3.3 mm2), of which 20 at the apex and 20 at the blunt end of each
half eggshell not affected by the presence of a chitosan coating. For both coated and
uncoated eggs, most shells were penetrated after 4 days of storage
(Table 3). In Experiments 1 and 2, most eggshells that were
penetrated had been penetrated by day 14 or 10 of storage,
