The story of the banana
Jack looked up at the green bunch of bananas just over head. “ I did not know that bananas grew wrong side up,” he said. “They look so queer, Uncle Tommy!” “Besides,” said Jill, “in the stores at home where we buy bananas they are yellow.” The two children had come to see their uncle, who lived on a banana farm. Jack and his sister Jill were finding the banana farm a very queer place. “Most people are surprised When they see bananas growing for the first time,” said Uncle Tommy. “ Try one of these ripe bananas and see if it is as good as those you buy at home.” Jack pulled off the yellow skin and took a bite of the banana. “This is good!” he said. “So it is!” said Uncle Tommy. And bananas are one of the oldest and best foods that people have.” Just than a little car come to a stop in front the house. “Here is Pedro,” said Uncle Tommy. “Let’s take a little ride through the farm. We can see bananas of very kind, from the tiny baby plants just showing in the ground to great trees morn than twenty feet high. “ Some of the banana plants are just sending out flowers. On others you will see the bunch starting to grow. And on many trees you will see the big bunches.”“ That will be fine,” said Jack. “I would like to see the farm.” “All in, then!” cried Uncle Tommy, and he helped Jill climb into the car. Jack sat next to Pedro, who was going to drive. Pedro started off. The car moved along quickly, by rows and rows of banana trees. Then Pedro stopped the car at the side track. Uncle Tommy and the children got out. They watched a small engine puff down the track. The engine was pulling a long train of cars field with bunches of green bananas that had just been cut. “Wait here, Pedro.” Said Uncle Tommy. “We will walk now. I want the children to see just how banana plants grow. We will be back soon.” “All right,” said Pedro. “ I will wait for you.” Followed by the two children, Uncle Tommy started to walk through the fields of the banana farm. Uncle Tommy and Jack and Jill went slowly through the field where many new plants were just coming up. In the next field the plans were much bigger. They were only three months old, but they were more than twice as big as the children. “Banana plants grow very fast, don’t they?” asked Jack. “Yes,” said Uncle Tommy. “Just look at these that we are coming to in the next field.” In the next field the banana plants were twice as big as Uncle Tommy. Jack and Jill stopped under a very big tree. “ I want to see a blossom,” said Jill.
