For students of communication, the distinction between high- and low- context cultures is among the most fascinating. High- and low- context cultures have several important differences in the way information is coded. Members of high-context cultures are more skilled in reading nonverbal behaviors, and they assume that other people will also be able to do so. They speak less than members of low-context cultures and they listen more. In general, their communication tends to be indirect and less explicit. Member of low-context cultures on the other hand stress direct and explicit communication. They emphasize verbal messages and the shared information they encode.
