In spite of the benefits that chitosan could Chitosan and chitosan derivatives provide as a papermaking additive, its large scale application is greatly limited due to the lack of water solubility under neutral/alkaline conditions. However, the amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups present on the chitosan backbone offer alternatives for chemical modification in order to obtain water soluble derivatives with various functionalities.13 Few studies are currently available on the application potential of chitosan derivatives in papermaking. Nevertheless, several papers demonstrate the efficiency of water soluble chitosan derivatives as process and functional additives.
