1. Determine which hand is dominant by interacting with the student and observing preferred usage.
2. Assist physically, where needed, in teaching the student to grasp the drink can in the non dominant hand.
3. Demonstrate to the student the action that is needed to open the tab on the can.
4. Physically prompt the actual opening of the can. Assistive devices may be necessary if the student has difficulties.
5. Combine the tasks of Steps 2 and 4 into one action.
6. Reduce all prompting until the student can independently open the can.
