The Taoist notion of wu-wei matches up well with the libertarian opposition to physical and political force. The libertarian view is that individuals are the sovereign rulers of their own destinies under the triune rights of life, speech, and property. Such rights are protected by the appropriate obligations: prohibition against physical force, prohibition against censorship, and prohibition against theft. Libertarians believe that if people are essentially left alone, they can truly prosper. Taoists believe that prosperity is, by definition, what happens when something is left alone.
