The term “operating system” is used here as a quick description of the way work is managed. Key differences between the current system and its proposed replacement follow.
In the current operating system, the project plan is a network of
activities, each to be completed by the appropriate trade. The underlying strategy is to optimize the project by optimizing each activity.
Some inventory is pushed to site that is advanced as required by the master schedule and some by a request from the trade supervision.
Trade supervision is responsible for site logistics, the movement of the wherewithal to the work face, and the process of installation. Their primary aim is to organize work to maximize productivity and progress. Project controls measure the success of these efforts.
Coordination with other crews is achieved by some reference to the master schedule, but is more frequently accomplished in weekly meetings and in the field.
