Wearing costumes and masks onHelloween, October 31, may have started out of fear of spirits of the dead. Christians celebrated a holiday to honor the the dead the next day, November 1. People thought that if they disguised themselves, the spirits would not recognize or harm them. People later started the custom of going from house to house in return for the money. The custom today of wearing costumes and of going from houes to house to ask for candy and other treats comes from these old traditions.
