Overall, students in anatomy laboratories using a dissection-based format had slightly
higher personal FA exposure levels when compared to their anatomy instructors. These
data support results from a pilot study 56 that was conducted with Elon University undergraduate biology students where the instructor, who was actively engaged in the majority of the dissections while his students observed, was consistently exposed to higher personal FA exposure levels.
Even though instructors were not dissecting in this study, FA exposure levels were similar to those who were dissecting. At one site, the instructor spent a significant amount of time moving
from table to table and then standing in close proximity to the donors while investigating
student findings, or identifying specific tissues. This “teacher behavior” may contribute to increased instructor exposure to FA in the anatomy laboratory.
