INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES IN SECOND LANGUAGE LEARNINGOver the years, some research hasshown that IQ scores were a goodmeans of predicting success in secondlanguage learning. However, IQ testsmay be more strongly related tometalinguistic knowledge than tocommunicative ability.Study: French Immersion Programmes in Canada, Fred Genesee (1976) foundthat, while intelligence was related to the development of French secondlanguage reading, grammar, and vocabulary, it was unrelated to oralproduction skills.Multiple intelligences was developed in 1993 by Dr. Howard Gardner. Multipleintelligences " suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q.testing, is far too limited". There are a proposed eight different intelligencesthat Gardner accounted for in broader range of human potential in childrenand adults.
