Out of the total study sample, 66% of participants currently consumed alcohol (2698 of 4085 total subjects). The average alcohol intake was 28.18 ± 57.19 g/day.
The mean values of the anthropometric and biochemical characteristics for all of the alcohol consumption categories are presented in Table 1. A greater amount of alcohol intake was associated with higher values for waist circumference, blood pressure, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol. A decrease in LDL cholesterol and adiponectin levels also corresponded with an increase in alcohol consumption. There were no significant differences in CRP levels and HOMA IR.
