In the discussion about sustainability economics, a limiting environmental boundaries — such as carrying capacity (Wackernagel et al., 2002), safe minimum standard (Ciriacy-Wantrup, 1963) or resilience (Holling, 1973) — is lacking. Baumgärtner and Quaas (2010a) mention in their research field #2 of sustainability economics concepts for such a limiting environmental factor, but do not further specify them: “thresholds, critical loads, tipping points, carrying capacity, and limited
resilience in social, environmental and coupled human–environment systems” (p. 448) are listed.
