Bipolar spectrum diagnostic scale
The BSDS was developed by Ronald Pies in efforts
to better screen for bipolar II and bipolar NOS, which
Ghaemi et al. (2005) believed were being overlooked by
other bipolar screening tools such as the MDQ. Ghaemi
et al. (2005) selected 95 adult, outpatient psychiatric
patients who had been previously diagnosed according
to DSM-IV criteria with BP-I, BP-II, BP-NOS, or UD. The
participants were given the self-reporting BSDS, and the
results shown in Table 3 demonstrated a sensitivity of 0.75
and a specificity of 0.93 for bipolar disorders as a whole
(Ghaemi et al., 2005).
