Of 1742 employees who visited one of the clinics prior to travel, 238 (14%) completed pre-travel surveys; 122 (51%) of the 238 completed both the pre- and post-travel surveys. Analyses were conducted among the 122 participants who completed both surveys (Table 1). Travelers worked in 163 countries. Nearly all (96%) went to developing nations (as defined by the International Monetary Fund [6]) with a mean duration of travel of 18 days (range 4e99 days). Most (78%) traveled to one country (range 1e3), with the most common regions being Africa (50%), Asia (23%), and Mexico/Central America (8%). The primary purpose of travel was epidemiology/technical assistance 81 (66%), followed by teaching/conducting trainings 51 (42%), attending professional meetings 45 (37%), working in a laboratory 15 (12%), and working in a health care facility 15 (12%).
