Whereas scale economy refers to the influence of a firm’s size upon unit costs of production,
it is also found that firms can achieve benefits from accumulated productive
experience. In effect, learning by doing may lead the firm to introduce more efficient
productive and managerial methods or change product design and benefit from fewer
and cheaper components. The workforce can also become more efficient through its
experience of the productive process.
