The rapid emergence and the breadth of globalization places new requirements on
the multinational manager role; it is a broader and much more complex role than
managers have been accustomed to playing (Punnett & Shenkar, 2007, p. 484). The
impact of global competition, maintained Eitzen and Zinn (2006), "keeps domestic
businesses on their toes, it forces them to innovate and improve product quality and
industrial productivity" (p. 53). Therefore, it was important that this research study
include a framework and discussion of globalization because, as Punnett and Shenkar
(2007) found, "to be successful in business today, it is especially important to understand
the nature of globalization and its impacts on managers" (p. 4).
