This article presents research on the perceived benefits
and challenges associated with the adoption of a sustainable
tourism certification scheme in the West of England,
United Kingdom, which is situated within the South West
of England and is comprised of the four unitary authorities
of North Somerset, Bristol, Bath and North East
Somerset (BANES) and South Gloucestershire (formerly
known as the county of Avon). It further explores potential
marketing and branding opportunities for small and
medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and provides recommendations
regarding how a regional organisation such as
South West Tourism can encourage local businesses to
join a national certification scheme. The first section
addresses the concept of sustainable tourism before discussing
previous studies into sustainable tourism certification
schemes. The second section introduces a case study
of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) in the
West of England, and presents the findings of a qualitative
study of seven hospitality and tourism SMEs’ attitudes
towards the scheme.
