Last week Japanese scientists unveiled what they describe as their "fifth generation" thinking computer at Argonne National Laboratory. Japan's New Institute for the New Generation Computing demonstrated the prototype of this now computer during a three day (11) on logic programming and parallel computing jointly (12) by the US National Science Foundation and the Japanese Government. Thirty Japanese and US scientists (13) the workshop Research on the "fifth generation"(14)in 1982 a 10 year, 10 billion yen (15) sponsored by Japan's Trade and Industry Ministry. And it was aimed at designing and (16) a radically new computer by 1992. The new machine could enable a business person to (17) ideas to a computer in the same way that person might dictate to a secretary and then the machine would turn those (18) into a formal letter, translate it if necessary and then electronically (19) it to the addressee. The new machine also would be able to take messages and handle inquiries. This is an experimental machine and the final design is not (20) yet.
