There was a time when male grooming was just about a quick wash, a shave and a splash of aftershave. Fast forward to 2006, however, and the unthinkable has happened. Role models such as David Beckham and Brad Pitt are influencing how men see themselves. These new, improved men are now spending more time in the bathroom than women.
A recent report in Drug Store News examines trends in the European market in male beauty products and shows changing attitudes in men. According to the report, "men are now more aware" and they're spending more than $1 billion annually on their appearance. While men didn't use any products like moisturizers and body lotions in the past, about 40% now think skincare is "extremely or very important". Manufacturers are now offering a lot of male products, such as Nivea for men, Gillette Complete Skincare, and a new Clearasil line.
David James, 28, a teacher from Santa Monica, thinks personal appearance is now more important among his male friends. He says, "Men are finally taking care of themsalves. The days of beauty products just for women are over." He also thinks that men now feel more pressure to look good in society:"Once it mas OK just to have a neat hairstyle and use some aftershave. Now that's changed in many ways good looking skin, hair and nails are essential, both for business and for attracting the opposite sex. "
So what does all this mean for women? Maybe it's time to get a bigger bathroom men need their space in front of the mirror, too!
