ask students to generate solutions that are generalizable. Many problems used in school are devoid of context and tend to have very little, if any, potential for generalizability beyond the solution to those problems.
However, when possible, students should be required to bulid solutions to problems that are reusable in scenarios other than those stated in the problems, for other data sets, or by other people.
Doing so encourages students to engage in the powerful mathematical process of generalization.
