While Thailand’s rail network connects with Malaysia’s and so offers services as far south as Singapore, it had no cross-border rail services with other GMS countries until March 2009 when a new train service operating from Bangkok over the Friendship Bridge to Thanalaeng opened.
The PRC’s rail network is extensive nationwide, and Yunnan Province and Guangxi are connected to it. In addition, there is one line each between Yunnan Province and Viet Nam and between Guangxi and Viet Nam. In most instances, the speeds are relatively slow compared to road. Also in most instances, lines are single track, constraining the growth of rail transport.
