in Turkey, the Ottoman emperors set about remaking the ancient Christian city of Constantinople as the capital of an Islamic empire, eventually renaming the city Istanbul. Mehmet
II began the rebuilding after he conquered the city in 1453 , making a bold statement of the greatness of the Ottoman sultan and his religion in the Grand Bazaar, the Topkapi palace, the fatih mosque complex and the Eyyup Sultan mosque. a substantial part of the Ottoman rebuilding was carried out through the construction of complexes of buildings centre on mosques and containing hospitals, madrasas, caravauserais and other structures
the Topkapi Palace, begun by Mehmet II in 1459, was not a single imposing building like a typical European palace, but instead consisted of a network of several small buildings, some plain and some practical, such as kitchens, but many splendid and lavishly decorated. the Topkapi Palace remained the residence of Ottoman sultans until 1853, when Sultan Abdulmecid i moved to the new constructed, European-style Dolnabahce Palace.
