The abrupt change in the life situation of a patient with an acute stroke is a devastating event. There is initial concern by patient and family about survival, and then there is fear about the uncertain consequences of continuing disability. Both the patient and family need good communication from health care professionals about the immediate issues. But with survival of the patient, members of the rehabilitation team should create a supportive environment in which realistic projections are made about potential for recovery and information is given about the contribution of postacute rehabilitation. The physician should provide appropriate medical information, but other team members play an important role in communicating the broader context within which the complex issues of rehabilitation will be addressed.
