Of 3 additional studies, 1 found that all patients
randomly assigned to PSM wanted to continue the program
after the study ended (25); in the second, 77% of
patients indicated at the end of the study that they
preferred self-testing to the hospital clinic (30); and in
the third, 98% expressed a preference for PST (34). In
the VA trial, patient satisfaction and quality of life were
significantly higher in the PST group than in the usual
care group (24). One study found significant improvements
in all domains of the Short Form-36 Health Survey
(except for physical functioning) in the patients randomly
assigned to PSM compared with no improvement
in the usual care patients. However, this study used a
before–after within-group comparison, rather than the
more robust between-group comparison (18). Three
studies found no significant difference in patient satisfaction
or quality of life between groups (27, 36, 41).
