furnaces are among the largest items of fired equipment within the process industries, and
they typically run at higher firebox and process temperatures than other types of process
furnaces and boilers.
In this chapter, we will focus on olefins furnaces to illustrate the factors that affect
the performance of fired equipment. We will also explore principles of energy-efficient
design, retrofit, maintenance, and operation that apply across all types of furnaces and
boilers, as well as some specific issues applicable to individual equipment types.
