Scientist at work
Robert Hooke (1635-1703) and Anton van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723)
In 1665, Robert Hooke observed a piece of plant cork using a simple microscope. He observed compartments surrounded by walls. He named these compartments "cells". It was later found that cells are a common feature in plants.
In the 1600s, Anton van Leeuwenhoek invented the world่'s first high-powered microscope. The microscope could enlarge the image of objects by about 270 times. He achieved this by polishing lenses to various curvatures. Each curvature could enlarge the images of objects to a different extent. Being curious, Leeuwenhoek placed a drop of rainwater under the microscope. He observed single-celled organisms swimming in it.
-Scientists usually work on what others have discovered. How did the discovery of cells by Robert Hooke and Anton van Leeuwenhoek contribute to the study of cells by other scientists?
