In 2004, after realizing downward pressure on margins, rising input prices, and a huge
product portfolio, Kraft initiated a corporate restructuring. Kraft announced this plan in
2004 hoping to return the company to its core businesses of cheese, coffee, and cookies.
During the restructuring, which is set to last for three years, up to 20 plants will be
closed, approximately 6,000 positions will be eliminated, and non-core products will be
divested.
