Images are selected based on a wordlist that comes from the modality or the RIS. Workstation users can review and manipulate (e.g., magnify, rotate, zoom on a region of interest) the images and add, edit, and delete annotations for later reference by themselves or other clinicians. High-resolution CRTs of up to 2048 × 2560 (2 K × 2.5 K) pixels are required. Multiple displays (2 or 4) are often used to view multiple images and/or do serial comparisons against prior studies or multimodality comparisons of the same current region of interest. Except for some specialized applications (e.g., nuclear medicine or ultrasound), displays are monochrome, gray-scale monitors.
