Warning Centre as part of an overhaul of the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology.
The government has decided the warning centre should fall under the Interior Ministry's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.
In addition to providing daily warnings over heavy rains, floods and landslides, the agency monitors earthquakes and tsunamis.
Deputy Prime Minister Prajin Juntong made the announcement after chairing Friday's meeting of the Committee on National Disaster Warning Administration, which focused on the transfer.
The MICT is set to be reshaped as the Digital Economy and Society Ministry, with the bill approved by the National Legislative Assembly on May 7 and sent to the King for endorsement. The DESM will take over all responsibilities from the MICT, the National Statistics Office, the Thai Meteorological Department, the Software Industry Promotion Agency, the Electronic Transactions Development Agency, Thailand Post, TOT Plc and CAT Telecom.
ACM Prajin said both ministries were instructed to make sure the warning centre can continue to function uninterrupted during the transfer.
