Survival was 100% for the duration of the two
experiments using fresh waste and rapid acceptability
of the feed was observed. Table 2 shows the
composition of the fresh green waste and in particular
the very low initial amount of ammonium-N. In
contrast, wastes, such as animal manures, can require
ageing to reduce ammonia contents before they are
acceptable to worms (Edwards, 1988). Despite 12
weeks in culture with no replacement or addition of
feed, no obvious signs of casting toxicity were
apparent.
