Budget
The 711 th Human Systems Wing originally awarded a $25,200 grant to conduct
this project. This funding was primarily for travel costs for on-site collaboration,
education of the SBAR tool, and dissemination of findings. Grant funding was delayed
due to problems with the federal budget causing the original plan to be adjusted. Content
validity from experts was obtained through telephone calls and e-mail. Costs such as
reproducing the SBAR tool were minimal and absorbed by the graduate student. The
grant was primarily used to fund travel costs to events to introduce the project and to
provide the findings of the pilot study.
Actual training for the SBAR tool will be completed at the squadron level
therefore cost will be absorbed by those individual units. Overtime costs for training is a
non-issue in the military environment. The education component is two-fold: initial and
additional. The initial education piece will consist of a training plan added to the USAF
School of Aerospace Medicine’s Flight Nurse Course. The additional education will
cover the current flyer in the AE system. They will receive computer-based training that
was developed by the graduate student using pre-existing software which will minimize
cost. Cost for implementation of the SBAR tool will be negligible; the only additional
32
material needed is one sheet of paper per patient record. The potential for decreased
errors and lives saved easily justifies the nominal cost of this project. The tool is for
patient handoff only and will not be part of the patient's medical record therefore
additional record keeping will be non-existent.
