Inaddition to the collection of MES data, participants were asked to record discomfort scores for the musculoskeletal areas involved in the study. The discomfort scores were based on vertical visual analog scales (VAS) (Huskisson, 1984), with anchors at the top ("Worst Possible Discomfort") and at the bottom ("No Discomfort"). Four scales were placed on the same page, and labeled "Neck", "Low Back and Buttock", "Shoulder and Upper Arm", and "Forearm, Wrist and Hand". The order of appearance of body part on this page remained consistent in order to avoid confusion by the participants as to which scale went with which body part. The vertical scale was 100mm in length, and had no numerical anchors along its length. VAS scores were measured by measuring the distance in millimeters between the "No Discomfort" anchor, and the location of the participant's mark on the line. The discomfort score form was administered by pen and paper at the start of the MES recording session, at 40min intervals throughout the recording session, and at the end of the 3h MES recording session. The discomfort survey took less than 5 s to complete each time, and was placed directly in front of the subject such that postural deviations were not required to complete the survey.
