Refer to Example 4. What is the probability that a can will have a flaw on the top, given that it has a flaw on the side?
Solution
We are given that P(flaw on top) = 0.02, and P(flow on side and flow on top) = 0.01. Using Equation (2.14),
P(flaw on top|flaw on side) = (P(flaw on top and flaw on side))/(P(flaw on side))
= 0.01/0.02
= 0.5
The results of Example 7 and Example 8 show that in general, P(A|B) ≠ P(B|A).
