The Incredible Incas
View passage image
The Incas were a group of people who lived in South America. They mainly lived in the country we now know as Peru.
In 1483, a man named Pachacuti became the king. He started wars against all of the Incas’ neighbors. He and his army won all of the wars. Soon, the Incas were the most powerful people in the land.
The Incas were different from us in many ways. First, they did not have the wheel. This means that they did not have wagons, wheelbarrows, or carts. Instead, they used animals called llamas to carry heavy things. Next, they did not have money. Instead, people traded with each other. Finally, they did not have writing. They did not write letters to one another. Instead, they sent runners who had to remember messages.
The Incas did not have some of the things we have today. But, they did have some things. For example, they had roads, highways, and bridges. They also made art, wove cloth, and played musical instruments. In this way, the Incas were the same as us.
The Incas ruled their land for hundreds of years. However, in 1533, they were taken over by Spain. Today, there are many people who live in Peru who are related to the Incas.
