There's no consensus about how this phrase came into being, but it does seem probable that "get down to brass tacks" originated in Texas in the 1860s. The earliest known usage is in an 1863 edition of the Texas paper The Tri-Weekly Telegraph: "When you come down to 'brass tacks'—if we may be allowed the expression—everybody is governed by selfishness.
