Education and Basic Research in the Neurosciences
Whether basic research in the Neurosciences has any relevance or application in education is a valid question. John Bruer has framed the debate with particular examples of how research findings have been inappropriately applied. Bruer (1997) believes that neuroscience is too far removed from day-to-day instruction to be of much value and that research findings from Cognitive Psychology already provide a vast amount of data that is applicable to instruction. While I agree that neuroscience research has been misinterpreted, I believe that basic research in the Neurosciences can and will have a valuable impact on educational theory and practice in a number of different ways.
