Education
The new policy included a section on the value of
education about the signs and symptoms of perinatal
mental health problems. Pregnant and postpartum
women need education on the value of mental
wellness promotion activities and the signs and
symptoms of perinatal mental health problems to
promote mental wellness and minimize symptoms.
This type of education can be provided at work and
in the primary and secondary care clinical settings.
Suggested settings include prenatal clinics, primary
care settings, hospitals and birthing centers, child
health clinics, emergency departments, and Women
Infant and Children nutrition clinics.29 Education
should include information on the value of adequate
nutrition, sleep, social connection, and moderate
exercise and methods to prevent or mitigate mental
health problems.24,26,27 Educational resources may be
printed or electronic and should include resources for
local services and emergency contact numbers.
