To understand the relationship between these two forms of subsistence engagement, it is necessary to examine how Inuit who are participants in the sport hunt industry use their earnings. As the following data from six Clyde River polar bear guides who worked on sport hunts between 1996 and 2007 (only one still was guiding in 2008), show, the return in food (Table 1) from each sport hunt dollar used to purchase equipment like snowmobiles is large in both material and, ultimately, socio-cultural terms.
