Through oil on canvas, São Paulo-based Lucas Arruda transports his viewers to another world. Each of his paintings, while apparently simple at first glance, contains an alternate space as vast as the deep recesses of our memory. Arruda employs pastel or muted hues to create a dreamlike glow, inside of which evocative and scratchy brushstrokes swirl around as if they are trying to escape the canvas. The atmosphere hangs heavy over seas and in dense forests, and any perceived calm is only the signal of an approaching storm. With each intimately sized painting, Arruda captures the contradicting energy and serenity of an unpredictable natural landscape.
