Sample and survey administration
A total of 712 hourly employees were employed at the facility at the time of the baseline
study. All hourly employees present for work were required to appear at one of
several meetings, conducted during work hours, during each of the three shifts, over a
two-day period. At each meeting the overall manager of the facility made a short
presentation representing the survey’s purpose as an effort to better understand how
employees felt about their work, and encouraged frank and honest responses to all
questions. The consultant followed with a short presentation assuring respondents of
anonymity. A total of 678 questionnaires were completed, of which 660 were usable for
the purposes of the study. The usable questionnaires represented 92.7 percent of all
hourly employees. Time and attendance records indicated that employees who did not
appear at one of the scheduled meetings were unavailable for reasons of illness,
vacation, temporary assignment to other locations, or on terminal leave waiting
retirement. The 12 questionnaire responses deemed unusable were grossly incomplete
with o15 percent of responses either completed or legible. Respondents had an
average of 19.85 years of longevity in the company and 5.01 years in their current jobs.
In total, 44 percent of the respondents identified themselves as female, 51.5 percent as
male and 4.5 percent were unidentified.
