In 1940 Dick and Mac McDonald opened McDonald's Bar-B-Que restaurant in San Bernardino, California, offering a large menu and delivery of your food right to your car. Then in 1948, Dick and Mac decided to close their location to complete some renovations. After three months, they reopened as a self-service, drive-in restaurant offering a 9-item menu, with the most popular item being their 15-cent hamburger. Then in 1954, Ray Kroc, who was working as a multimixer salesperson, visited the restaurant with the intention of increasing his sales of mixers to the restaurant. Ray was captivated by the operation and learnt that the McDonald brothers had a desire to franchise their operations. The next year, Kroc opened his first McDonald's in Des Plaines, Illinois. By 1959, McDonald's had expanded its operations to a total of 100 stores.
