Bai Sri Su Kwan is a welcoming ceremony of northeastern Thailand.
Kwun means spirit or soul. Some Thais believe that Kwun can protect them and their friends and family during their lives wherever they are in the world. We are told that we are only able to feel our own protective spirit or Kwun; we cannot see or hear it. Kwun will bring us happiness when it is with us. If Kwun leaves us, there will be problems. We need to get Kwun back.
And what is Bai Sri? Bai Sri is the thing that village elders have taught and valued. It is a religious ceremony passed through generations.
During this ceremony a Bai Si tree, which is usually made of green banana leaves and flowers is the centre point. It may signify the centre of the universe. We use white or colored strings to decorate this tree and to tie around the wrists of the honored guest. While tying, we ask the Kwun to bring goodness and protection to the person. Many people also ask that something “bad” please go away from their lives.
