I've followed Vivienne Tam from a distance since we first met in my office at the HKTDC in New York thirty years ago. At the time, she was just starting out in NYC, and I recall her showing selections from her "East Wind Code" line. Each piece included a patch of bright red fabric - on a collar or cuff - as a nod to her homeland, China.
Tam is right in saying that at that time, Hong Kong and China's reputations as sources of original design were non-existent. In fact, the ramp up in quality that would allow for maximizing the value of HK's existing export quota allocations was only beginning to bear fruit. Indeed, Tam HAD TO move to New York to succeed. Hearing her quoted in this article, neither her message, nor drive, nor focus have diminished one iota.
It's generous for Vivienne to give thanks to the HKTDC, considering all of the work it did during those years to develop the global perception of HK quality.
One great example was a fashion show and reception for store principals of Bloomingdale's, Federated Department Stores, and others led by Marvin Traub and Lee Abraham that opened up an additional USD18 million in HK open-to-buy. Kudos go to Len Dunning, then HKTDC's ED and showman supreme, who chose Ultima as the venue and to open the show by projecting a scene from "Soldier of Fortune" in which Clark Gable carries Susan Hayward out of the house and up the driveway overlooking the harbour: the curtain went up, and the event unfolded on that very spot.
