A spectroscopystudyofSm3þ and Sm3þ/Eu3þ doped zincphosphateglassesisperformedthrough
photoluminescencespectraanddecaytimeprofile measurements.UnderSm3þ excitationat344nm,the
Sm3þ singly dopedglassshowsanorangeglobalemissionwith x¼0.579and y¼0.414CIE1931chro-
maticity coordinates,whereastheSm3þ/Eu3þ co-doped sampleexhibitsorangeoverallemissions
(x¼0.581 and y¼0.398, and x¼0.595 and y¼0.387) andreddish-orangeoverallemission(x¼0.634 and
y¼0.355) uponexcitationsat344,360and393nm,respectively.Suchluminescencefromtheco-doped
sample isoriginatedbythesimultaneousemissionofSm3þ and Eu3þ. UnderSm3þ excitationat344and
360 nm,theEu3þ emission issensitizedandenhancedbySm3þ throughanon-radiativeenergytransfer
process. Thenon-radiativenaturewasinferredfromtheshorteningoftheSm3þ lifetime observedinthe
Sm3þ/Eu3þ co-doped sample.AnanalysisoftheSm3þ emission decaytimeprofiles usingtheInokuti–
Hirayamamodelsuggeststhatanelectricquadrupole–quadrupoleinteractionintoSm–Eu clustersmight
dominate theenergytransferprocess,withanefficiency of0.17.
