To generate the data, we selected a random sample of 800
manufacturing firms with 50 or more employees from the Hong
Kong Trade and Development Council internet database
system. The sample included businesses from a range of
industrial sectors, including textiles and clothing, machinery,
electronics and pharmaceuticals. To obtain responses, we
contacted all the firms in the sample by telephone to determine
eligibility and to elicit cooperation in the study. All firms in the
sample were judged to sell products and/or services to industrial
or organizational customers. The export manager in those firms
agreeing to participate was mailed a questionnaire, a cover
letter, and a pre-paid reply envelope. One week after the initial
posting, telephone calls were undertaken to increase the
response rate. Two weeks after this, a telephone call was
made to determine reasons for non-response.
