Khao Kradong Forest Park, formerly called in Khmer Phanom Kradong which means turtle shell from its shape, is located in Muaeng District, Buriram. It is an extinct volcano massif similar to other volcano massifs in Buriram e.g. Khao Phanom Rung Volcano Massif, Khao Angkhan Volcano Massif. Nearby popular tourist attraction is Buriram United Football Club's New i-Mobile Stadium.
Khao Kradong Forest Park, a place for relaxing, is an ancient extinct volcano with the summit at 265 meters high above the sea level. The summit has a pool which is believed to be the mouth of the volcano where you can study lava stones. It enshrines Phra Suphattharabophit, an important Buddha image of the province and inside the ancient stupa houses the replica of Buddha's footprint. There is also a suspension bridge for viewing the scenery of the volcano massif. Additionally, there are several local plant species worth studying such as the fruit of the Devil Yoni Tree, a rare plant found only in volcanic area.
You can go up the mountain either by walking up 297 steps or driving up to the massif which you will see Buddha images in various poses along the way.
Khao Kradong Volcanic Mouth is in Khao Kradong Village, Samet Sub-District, Muaeng District, Buriram Province. Located 265 meters above the sea level, it ages around three hundred thousand to nine hundred thousand years and its shape looks like the half-moon. The south massif is called Khao Yai (Big Mountain) while the north one is called Khao Noi (Small Mountain) or Khao Kradong. The massif in the eruption area or the valley area is currently a pool and there is stone walking path to the viewpoint. This remain is the best and youngest extinct volcano in Thailand.
Naga Raj Steps was built in 1969 providing an easy access of 297 steps to the massif of Khao Kradong where people can worship to Phra Suphattharabophit. Khao Kradong Festival is held on the full moon night of the fifth lunar month and the festival of Devorohana is held annually on the day of Buddhist Lent ending and the day before.
