Overall, 48.2% (n=2690) of the sample died during a mean 14.4 (± 4.1 SD) years of followup.
Mortality risk was highest in the first year after hip fracture (Table 2). During the first
year after an index hip fracture, 16.9% (n=189) of the cases died compared with 8.4%
(n=374) of the non-fracture controls [OR 2.2 (1.8, 2.7)]. This increase in mortality persisted
when the analysis was adjusted for other risk factors for hip fracture, including total hip
BMD [OR 2.4 (1.9, 3.1)]. While deaths in the control group were evenly spread over the
first year of observation (~25% every 3 months), 72% of year 1 deaths in the cases occurred
within 6 months of a hip fracture. Moreover, over half (52%) of deaths in the first year
following hip fracture occurred within the first 3 months for the cases.
