Our results demonstrate that T. atroviride SC1 could be useful for the prevention and control of A. gallica in agricultural systems. With only one application of the biocontrol agent on bark mulch, the health of strawberry plants was preserved over an entire production cycle. When pre-treated bark is used as mulch, plants can enjoy the root-colonization benefits provided by Trichoderma (Porras et al., 2007) together with the agronomic benefits provided by bark mulch. Another interesting point is the potential activity of T. atroviride SC1 against A. gallica in cases in which the pathogen has already developed on bark used as mulch. This property could be used to limit the development of Armillaria in infected bark that has already been spread along crop rows.
