Part I: neurogenic inflammation induced by SP
Neurogenic skin inflammation following topical application
of an irritant substance or environmental stimulation
induces vascular changes and the production of inflammatory mediators. Substance P is one of the main neuropeptide that triggers skin inflammatory response. Even in the
absence of systemic blood circulation, SP addition to culture medium of surviving skin induced a dose dependent
edema, vasodilation and extravasation of lymphocytes
through microvascular walls and mast cell degranulation.
Moreover, the inflammatory response is associated with the
release of pro-inflammatory mediators such as TNFa.
